A Mat-Punching System You Should Try
Punching mats is something every angler does at some point in their fishing lifetime. And there are many ways you can go about doing it.
For most anglers, sticking to the tried and true methods of punching works just right. Use this hook and these baits. Oh and don’t forget this ratio reels and that action of rod.
What many anglers don’t know is that professional anglers tweak the norm to create their own take on these common rigs. These tweaks are what separates them from the rest of the pack and enables them to catch more quality fish than you and I.
John Cox is one of those professional anglers. From the type of rod he uses to the reel and hooks, John has mastered his take on mat punching and recently shared his thoughts with FLW.
One thing stands out to me in the article. His reel choice. John prefers a 6.6:1 or 7.3:1 gear ratio instead of a more high speed reel. And he does so using a Revo STX reel that is by far one of my favorites on the market.
Why does he prefer this? Well you will have to read the article (again you can read it here) to find out. But believe me, it’s very interesting and makes sense when you think of it.
Check it out and let us know what you think. Is this setup similar to yours? Is it something you are thinking about changing to?
